What is pageaddict?

Pageaddict is a Firefox extension that will remember how much time you spend on each web site during the day. It allows you to "tag" each site and restrict how much time you spend on sites with a given tag.

Why is it useful?

Some of us find that we end up spending far too much time reading more or less pointless web sites. PageAddict may help making you aware of how much of each day you waste surfing websites.

How do I use it?

First, install the PageAddict Firefox Extension.

Then browse the web using Firefox as you normally do.

When you want to see how much you have been browsing today visit pageaddict.com.

You can use tags to categorize your browsing, store information over several days, and restrict your access to certain sites.

What are tags?

Tags are labels that you apply to websites, for instance: 'news', 'email', 'games'. To create a tag, use the 'tags...' dropdown menu to select 'new tag', then type the name of the tag.

To tag a website, select the check box to the left of the site name on pageaddict.com, then select the tag name from the 'tags...' dropdown menu.

To restrict access to a site, create a tag for the category you want to restrict, tag the relevant sites and then select the restrict option for that tag.

Does it work?

PageAddict was created in the hope that it may be useful, but comes with no guarantee or evidence of effectiveness. If you think that you may be suffering from Internet addiction, please see a doctor.

Is it accurate?

PageAddict may from time to time give inaccurate results. In particular, if you leave your computer for a period with a browser window open and in front (i.e. as the active window), pageaddict will count that period in your Web usage. If you find any consistent inaccuracies, please e-mail pageaddict@gmail.com.

Should I worry about my privacy? Where do you store my data?

Details of the web sites that you have visited are stored in your browser and are not sent to any external websites. PageAddict is designed such that external websites cannot access this information and does not use cookies. if you're interested in how pageaddict works, please see the Greasemonkey source code.

But I have to visit a website to see the results!

pageaddict detects that you visit the pageaddict.com website and modifies the appearance of this website locally in your browser. In future versions of pageaddict, you will be able to see these results without visiting the website.

Is pageaddict open source/free software?

pageaddict is distributed under the GNU public license. To view the source code, open the XPI file as a zip archive.

Could this information be disclosed due to flaw in Firefox or pageaddict?

It is possible that a future software flaw will expose Firefox internals to external websites. We have taken two steps to mitigate the impact of this possibility: firstly, every night PageAddict will reset the actual names of theweb sites visited, and only time spent in each "tag" is retained for future reference. Secondly, you can use the "ignore site" drop-down menu option to not record time you spend on a website.
